| Jo Coenen’s early work for the Driessen Bakery in Nuth (1981) and a school in Sittard (1983) already shows his predilection for carefully slotting his buildings - usually a compilation of current types, regional motifs and personal memories - into their context. That Coenen does not shun monumentalism, however, and possesses great associative powers is clear from his designs for a library (1983) and the Chambers of Commerce (1988) in Heerlen and Maastricht, the municipal office in Delft (1985) and the Haans company premises in Tilburg (1989). Forming a provisional climax to his work is the Netherlands Architecture Institute in Rotterdam (1993), though it also closes a chapter. | ||
| Al in zijn vroege werk voor bakkerij Driessen in Nuth (1981) en de LOM-school in Sittard (1983) toont Coenen zijn voorkeur voor een zorgvuldige inpassing van zijn gebouwen, veelal samengesteld uit gangbare types, regionale motieven en eigen herinneringen. Dat Coenen ook de monumentaliteit niet schuwt en beschikt over een groot associatief vermogen blijkt uit zijn ontwerpen voor een bibliotheek (1983) en de Kamers van Koophandel (1988) in Heerlen en Maastricht, het stadskantoor in Delft (1985) en het bedrijfsgebouw Haans in Tilburg (1989).
